Abstract

To observe the pulpal response after pulpotomy of formocresol technique, vital pulpotomy by two appointments method, and nonvital pulpotomy were performed. Vital pulpotomy was done in two methods.
Histologic observations were as follows.
1) When zinc oxide eugenol mixed with formocresol for capping material was used at 2nd visit after vital pulpotomy, compressed and dark stained pulpal tissue appeared at outer layer. In middle third of radicular pulp, coagulation necrosis was found. The pulpal tissue of apical third had a tendency to be transformed to coagulation necrosis after dissapearance. of cellular detail. In later stage, fibrotic tissue was formed from the apex and seemed to replace with necrotic pulpal tissue.
2) When only zinc oxide eugenol paste was used as capping material following vital pulpotomy, the pulpal response was. almost similar to above conditions. But it was likely to appear a little later.
3) In nonvital pulpotomy cases, fibrosis was incomplete and acute inflammatory change was observed in radicular pulp.
